Five Healthy Tips for Back to School

It’s back to school time already. To make sure your family has a healthy, happy start to the new school year, the experts at San Juan Health Partners Pediatrics have some tips.

1. Keep up to date with vaccinations

Make sure your child’s vaccinations are up to date. When you schedule a well-check appointment, your provider will perform a physical exam, track your child’s growth and development and also make sure your child has received all age-appropriate immunizations for their health and safety.

2. Get a sports physical

If your child needs a sports physical for school athletics, don’t wait. A sports physical is important to determine if it’s safe for your child to participate in sports. San Juan Health Partners offers sports physicals at three different locations.

3. Practice good sleep hygiene

Set a sleep schedule with a routine bedtime for your child and stick to it. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends 9-12 hours a night for children ages 6-12. Start putting your child to bed at their designated school night bedtime a week before school starts to get a good routine going.

4. Eat healthy

Pack healthy meals for fuel for the school day, and don’t forget breakfast. Students who eat breakfast are more alert during class than those who don’t. Find more helpful feeding information for your school-aged child on our Health Library. Here are unique ideas for healthy lunches for kids

5. Stay hydrated

Hydrate- but choose wisely. Limit sugary or caffeinated drinks.  Water is best. That’s why we always say, “if you’re thirsty, drink water!” Benefits include preventing fatigue and enhancing brain function.

By following these simple tips, your child is sure to head back to school with a healthy start. To schedule an appointment for a well-check visit or sports physical with San Juan Health Partners Pediatrics, call us at 505.609.6700.
