San Juan Regional Medical Center’s Childbirth Center is undergoing a remodel to better serve our patients and their families. We were fortunate to receive government funding for this remodel, which began in June and is expected to take nine months to complete. We are excited to offer this newly remodeled space to our community in the spring of 2025.
Our community can expect to see a number of exciting improvements, including:
- Updated private patient rooms with a modern look
- Welcoming, secure entrance
- More compliant-friendly nurses' stations
- Birthing gym for moms who are low risk
Construction continues in the Childbirth Unit of San Juan Regional Medical Center.
These enhancements will significantly improve the experience for moms, babies and their families.
“Bringing life into this world is a beautiful and profound experience, and with this remodel, we aim to enhance that experience even further,” said Sonja Crum, Director of Women’s and Children’s Services at SJRMC. “While many hospitals are struggling and closing their OB units, we are proud to be investing in and improving ours. This commitment to better is something we can all take pride in.”
As a Baby-Friendly® designated facility, we support mother/baby bonding and optimal infant feeding practices. Skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth and having babies’ room-in with their mothers are two important components. We have a phenomenal lactation team that helps support all our moms, regardless of how they choose to feed their babies. Our patient educator has built a robust program of classes for our community, available free of charge. The Childbirth Center also features a Level II special care nursery with specially trained nurses for babies that need extra attention. We partner with Presbyterian NICU in Albuquerque to offer telehealth care to better support fragile infants who need a little extra help at birth.
As we approach the opening of the newly remodeled Childbirth floor, stay tuned for our ribbon-cutting ceremony and community tours so everyone can see the new space.
