Monday, December 11, 2017 SJRMC Announces New Chief Medical Officer

We are pleased to announce that Robert M. Underwood, MD, has joined San Juan Regional Medical Center as the hospital’s new Chief Medical Officer. As the CMO, he will lead the quality and medical staff services departments and work closely with the medical staff and hospital leadership to assure the hospital is fulfilling its responsibilities to patients for the provision of quality care. Dr. Underwood’s first day of service to SJRMC is Monday, December 11, 2017.

Dr. Underwood comes to San Juan Regional Medical Center from St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center, a Centura Health organization in Pueblo, Colorado. As the Chief Medical Officer there, Dr. Underwood was instrumental in leading efforts to improve quality and service in key areas throughout the hospital.

“Dr. Underwood brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in leadership to our organization,” San Juan Regional Medical Center President and CEO Jeff Bourgeois said. “He will be a tremendous asset to SJRMC as we continue to elevate the quality and service offered throughout our organization.”   

Dr. Underwood holds a Master of Science in Health Care Delivery from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire; a Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia; and a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Management from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and is an American Association for Physician Leadership Certified Physician Executive (CPE).
