Monday, February 3, 2020 SJRMC Celebrates National Heart Month by Raising Awareness about Heart Health

February is National Heart Month and San Juan Regional Medical Center is working to make our community a healthier place, one heart at a time. According to the New Mexico Department of Health, heart disease is the leading cause of death in New Mexico. As an Accredited Chest Pain Center by the American College of Cardiology, San Juan Regional Medical Center is working to improve that statistic through community outreach, education, and awareness.

Heart disease is preventable. Adopting heart-healthy habits and making lifestyle changes can decrease your risk of cardiovascular heart disease and put you on the road to better health. In fact, there are four simple things you can do to prevent a heart attack.

In addition to taking steps to prevent a heart attack, it’s also important to recognize the warning signs and symptoms, especially early signs of a heart attack that occur in more than 50 percent of patients. If recognized in time, these "beginnings" can be treated before the heart is damaged.

Learn the signs and symptoms so you can become an active bystander to save a life – even if it’s yours. Take the pledge and share Early Heart Attack Care awareness with your loved ones here: https://www.sanjuanregional.com/EHAC.

If you suspect you or anyone you know is having a heart attack, call 911 immediately and follow the advice “survive, don’t drive.” First responders have the training and technology to quickly save a life. In fact, San Juan Regional Medical Center’s EMS Department was a recipient of the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline EMS Gold Plus award for applying the most up-to-date evidence-based treatment guidelines to improve patient care and outcomes. San Juan Regional Medical Center was the only recipient in the Four Corners, as well as the only one in the entire state of New Mexico.
