Friday, December 16, 2022 SJRMC Offering Higher Acuity Nursery Services with Telehealth Partnership

San Juan Regional Medical Center is now offering care for higher acuity newborns right here in our Childbirth Center thanks to a new telehealth partnership with Presbyterian Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) team.

We were recently able to purchase an Amwell telemedicine cart thanks to a donation to San Juan Medical Foundation. This cart provides state-of-the-art video conference technology which allows us to keep newborns who require a higher level of care in our Level II Special Care Nursery instead of transferring them to another facility. Babies get the benefit of staying with their parents close to home, with Presbyterian’s specialists available 24/7 with the click of a button.

“Having this technology at San Juan Regional Medical Center is a huge win for our community,” said pediatrician Dr. Bradley Scoggins. “Through the Amwell cart, we have direct, immediate access to Presbyterian’s NICU team to work together in the best interests of the infants entrusted in our care.”

This technology will allow many families to stay right here at home while their newborns get the specialty care they need. This reduces travel time for parents and families, cutting down on costs and stress while allowing them to focus on their newborn’s care. Additionally, our telehealth partnership with Presbyterian improves timely access to neonatology expertise so newborns who need it can receive additional medical care, address health challenges they are facing, and reduce the odds of transfer to a higher level of care.

San Juan Regional Medical Center’s Level II Special Care Nursery is a five-bed nursery with specialty trained nurses. While infants are in our Special Care Nursery, we provide onsite boarding services to parents and access to hotels, food and shopping for families. Our facility is designated Baby-Friendly® by Baby-Friendly USA, meaning we have gone through a rigorous process to implement and uphold the highest standards of infant feeding care and mother/baby bonding. We encourage rooming in once the infant is stable and able to do so and welcome the chance for families to bond and support one another through our generous Visitation Policy.
