Wednesday, December 1, 2021 San Juan Regional Medical Center Urges Community to Get COVID-19 Boosters for the Holidays

The holidays are here and many of us will be gathering with loved ones or traveling to visit family. With COVID-19 cases up across the country and hospitalizations at record highs, it’s critical to do everything in our power to protect ourselves and our loved ones from COVID-19. The best thing you can do is get a vaccine. If you’ve already gotten the vaccine, get a booster.

Why get a booster?

  • Data shows that protection from vaccines starts to fade at about six months.
  • The COVID-19 booster BOOSTS your immunity back up to or even higher than initial vaccination, giving you an extra shot of protection.
  • Booster shots are likely to reduce transmission of the virus, which could limit the spread of the virus.

Who is eligible?

  • Anyone who received their second dose of Moderna or Pfizer vaccine at least six months ago.
  • Anyone who got a single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least two months ago.

Which booster should I get?

  • The government has said it’s OK to “mix and match” the vaccines.
  • Studies show there’s benefit for those who received a Johnson and Johnson vaccine to get an MRNA booster.

What are the side effects?

  • Side effects are mild and are similar to earlier doses.
  • They are a signal that your immune system is responding and building up protection.

Will shots offer protection in time for the holidays?

  • Studies show that COVID-19 vaccines take about a week to start making a difference.
  • Getting a shot in the next few weeks will provide extra protection for Christmas and New Year’s.

Do I need a booster if I’ve had COVID?

  • The combination of infection plus vaccination has been shown to be more protective than either alone.
  • Protection from vaccination is more consistent and predictable.

How do I schedule my booster?

Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting a booster for the holidays.
