Thursday, October 6, 2022 San Juan Regional Medical Center Acquires da Vinci® Xi™ Robotic Surgery System

San Juan Regional Medical Center is now offering minimally-invasive robotic assisted surgeries with the recent addition of the da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgery System. The da Vinci Xi System was designed with the goal of further advancing the technology used in minimally invasive surgery and will be used across a spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures at San Juan Regional Medical Center.

Surgeons and Operating Room staff undergo additional extensive training to ensure the highest standards of patient safety are maintained during surgical procedures. The da Vinci integrates innovative technology with a precision surgical team to provide continued excellent patient outcomes.

During robotic-assisted surgery, the surgeon is 100 percent in control of the da Vinci System, which translates the surgeon’s hand movements into smaller, more precise movements.  The Xi System’s immersive 3D-HD vision system provides surgeons a highly magnified view, virtually extending their eyes and hands into the patient.

“We are truly thrilled to be bringing this cutting-edge technology to patients in the Four Corners. Having surgeons that embrace this advanced technology is extremely beneficial to our patients, and we look forward to expanding our minimally invasive surgical options with the capabilities the Xi System brings,” said CFO and Acting Administrator John Mayer.

Key features and benefits of the da Vinci Xi system include:

  • 3D high-definition camera that allows a surgeon to see
  • A crystal-clear and highly magnified view of anatomy during operation
  • Anatomy not normally visible to the human eye
  • The fine details of surgery
  • Access anatomical locations that were previously difficult to reach by other approaches
  • Beyond the limits of the human hand
  • Access hard-to-reach places
  • Precise control
  • Tremor-free, intricate movements

Not only does robotic-assisted surgery provide the surgeon with greatly enhanced capabilities, but it offers many benefits to patients as well. Depending on the procedure, robotic-assisted surgery may result in:

  • A shorter hospital stay
  • Less post-operative pain
  • Lower rate of complications
  • Faster recoveries

“There are so many advantages to undergoing a robotically-assisted procedure as a patient,” said Surgeon Dr. Damon Kalcich, Department of Surgery Chairman at San Juan Regional Medical Center. “Some surgeries that were previously performed as open procedures can now be done as minimally invasive. Smaller incisions mean less blood loss, less pain, less scarring, quicker recovery and leaving the hospital sooner.”

San Juan Health Partners General Surgery and San Juan Health Partners Urology are currently offering a variety of surgeries utilizing the da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgery System. To find out if robotic-assisted surgery is an option for you, talk to your surgeon.
