Tuesday, February 18, 2025 San Juan Regional Medical Center Celebrates Robotic Surgery Milestone

San Juan Regional Medical Center is celebrating a major milestone as our Operating Room team performs the 1,000th robotic surgery with our da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgery System.

San Juan Regional Medical Center has been offering our patients minimally invasive robotic assisted surgeries since acquiring the da Vinci Xi System in late 2022. The da Vinci Xi delivers proven capabilities for a wide spectrum of procedures across multiple specialties.

“We are so proud to offer this advanced surgical care to patients in our community. Integrating this innovative technology with a precision surgical team allows us to improve care for patients while providing continued excellent patient outcomes,” said Kammie Monarch, Chief Nursing Officer.

During robotic-assisted surgery, the surgeon is 100 percent in control of the da Vinci System, which translates the surgeon’s hand movements into smaller, more precise movements.  Key features and benefits of the da Vinci Xi system include:

  • Advanced 3D high-definition vision
  • Crystal-clear and highly magnified view of anatomy during operation
  • Anatomy not normally visible to the human eye
  • True depth perception
  • Innovative tools for a vast use of ranges
  • Wristed instruments bend and rotate far beyond the abilities of the human hand
  • Access hard-to-reach places
  • Tremor-free, intricate movements

Robotic-assisted surgery offers many benefits to patients. Depending on the procedure, robotic-assisted surgery may result in:

  • A shorter hospital stay
  • Less post-operative pain
  • Lower rate of complications
  • Faster recoveries

Tuesday’s 1,000th surgery was a Robotic Inguinal Hernia Repair performed by General Surgeon Dr. James Boyd. The da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgery System is utilized by multiple surgeons across various specialties at San Juan Regional Medical Center, including General Surgery, Urology, and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
