San Juan Regional Medical Center is proud to recognize our exceptional nurses, including several who were recently honored at the New Mexico Nursing Excellence Awards in Albuquerque. This annual gala recognizes excellence in nursing practice and celebrates nurses for the contributions they make to their organizations, communities and our state.

Dilan Jones, a nurse educator on our Childbirth, PACU and Pre-op Units, received the Excellence in Practice award for Maternal/Women’s Health. Raychel Stiegelmeyer, a nurse on our Medical and Behavioral Health Units, received the Excellence in Practice award in Behavioral Health.

Dilan is a seasoned nurse who makes a connection with her patients from the moment she steps into their room. She builds trusting relationships, listening to and supporting birth plans and offering guidance and direction when a plan needs to change. In fact, she received a DAISY® Award for her support of a patient through two failed induction attempts. The patient said that Dilan “made a difference in my stay in literally 20 minutes of walking in my room. She helped me feel like a person again.”

Dilan stays current on best practices and holds several certifications in women’s health. This allows her to safely support patients and their growing families and work with her fellow team members to update and create policies to make sure they are current with best practice.

“She loves to educate and uses every opportunity to pull a chair up and sit one-on-one with her patients. She is full of kindness and compassion and a light that radiates from her that patients lean towards,” Dilan’s manager, Sonja Crum, said.

Raychel has a deep commitment to the care of patients with mental health conditions. This is her passion and why she became a nurse. Her calm demeanor, positive attitude and expansive knowledge help her connect with her patients and have meaningful conversations about their care. For example, while caring for a suicidal patient, Raychel provided the patient with a journal and encouraged her to use it to help her manage her emotions. The patient expressed deep gratitude to Raychel, leading to DAISY® Award recognition.

Raychel pursues opportunities to continue her psychiatric education with plans to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner. She enjoys teaching graduate nurses and nursing students and shares her skills and knowledge freely, helping others improve the care they provide to behavioral health patients.

“Raychel consistently chooses to do the right things for her patients, no matter what; and she demonstrates reverence for her patients by taking an unbiased look at each one of them and then individualizing the care she provides to best meet their needs,” said Behavioral Health Unit Manager Victoria Bessey.

San Juan Regional Medical Center would like to congratulate Dilan and Raychel, as well as all our outstanding nurses nominated for New Mexico Nursing Excellence Awards.
