Tuesday, May 21, 2013 Mr. Juan Hart Reminds Public that San Juan Regional Medical Center and All Affiliate Campuses are Tobacco Free with New Sign Placement May 28

San Juan Regional Medical Center remains a tobacco-free organization as of August 6, 2006, and reminds the public that there is no tobacco use on its campuses. The decision to become tobacco free was implemented when the new east tower opened, both for the same purposes: to create a more healing and healthy environment for all.

Mr. Juan Hart, the How to Prevent a Heart Attack mascot, is passionate about promoting heart health, and will be placing new tobacco-free signs on the hospital’s main campus and affiliate clinics on Tuesday, May 28 at 2:00 p.m. These signs not only communicate our tobacco-free policy, but remind everyone that not smoking is one of four simple, life-giving steps to prevent a heart attack. (The other three are exercising for 30 minutes, five times a week; eating five fruits or vegetables daily; and maintaining a healthy body weight.)

We recognize that as a healthcare organization, we set the example and are a leader for health promotion. We take pride in setting this standard for the betterment of our patients, visitors, and staff. We proudly promote the right for all to breathe clean air while on our campuses, as tobacco use and second-hand smoke remain the number one cause of preventable death in the nation. By preventing the exposure of second-hand smoke, we uphold our covenant of safety and sacred trust to the community.

As we approach our seventh year as a tobacco-free campus—which includes all affiliate campuses—we are reminding everyone that we are here to serve the community in the safest and most healing way possible, which includes maintaining our tobacco-free policy.
