Thursday, January 23, 2025 San Juan Regional Medical Center’s Childbirth Center Earns High Marks from CDC for Newborn Feeding Practices

We’re thrilled to share that San Juan Regional Medical Center achieved an outstanding score of 98/100 in the 2024 Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care Report. That’s 16 percent above the national average and 18 percent above the Southwest region average.

The Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s national survey of newborn feeding practices in hospitals across the U.S. that provided maternity services in the last year. San Juan Regional Medical Center’s high score reflects our commitment to providing exceptional care to mothers and newborns.

“This level of achievement exceeds healthcare organizations across the country and represents the high level of care our team is giving to patients, as well as the high level of collaboration with our physicians and providers,” said Kammie Monarch, Chief Nursing Officer at SJRMC.

Each hospital’s total score for the report is determined by six sub-scores in the areas of:

  • Immediate Postpartum Care
  • Rooming-In
  • Feeding Practices
  • Feeding Education
  • Discharge Support
  • Institutional Management

“Our steady improvement in both regional and national rankings highlights the impact of implementing Baby-Friendly practices designed to support mother/baby bonding and optimal infant feeding practices,” said Sonja Crum, Director of Women and Children Services at SJRMC. “Together, we’re making a difference for families and newborns every day.”
