Babies born at San Juan Regional Medical Center this summer will be going home with something special. The Las Cruces chapter of Project Linus recently donated 60 new handmade blankets to the hospital’s Childbirth Center. The chapter coordinator, Susan Stoltzfus, wanted to give back to San Juan Regional Medical Center after her first great-grandchild was born at the hospital in May.

“My granddaughter had a baby girl. It was a very hard delivery and the staff was amazing,” Stoltzfus said.

The blankets are all handmade “with tender loving care” and provide that extra layer of security for children of all ages. The blankets donated to San Juan Regional Medical Center are swaddle sized receiving blankets; perfect to bundle up a new bundle of joy. 

Project Linus is a nonprofit organization that gives blankets to children in need from birth to 18 years. Volunteers focus on providing blankets to children in trauma situations and work closely with social service agencies, hospitals, police departments and fire departments… really anywhere that a child might be in need of a big hug!

The Las Cruces chapter of Project Linus donates an average of 4,000 new handmade blankets a year to more than three dozen organizations. Nationally, the organization has donated more than 8.5 million blankets since 1995.

When Stoltzfus got the chance to visit her new great-granddaughter for the first time, it was the perfect opportunity to bring some blankets with her and drop them off at the hospital. We are grateful for this generous gift and want new parents to know the special story behind the blanket their baby comes home with.
