San Juan Regional Health

Farmington, NM (Wednesday, February 23, 2011)—With the sun shining and a crisp but tolerable temperature, over 500 hardy souls gathered at the San Juan Regional Medical Center and San Juan Health Partners Cardiology’s third annual Goosebump Walk/Run and ‘A Fair of the Heart’ on Saturday, February 12. 

    Participants of all ages came from as far away as California, Utah, and Texas—and closer to home here in the Four Corners—to join the hospital and Farmington community in celebrating National Heart Month, which is held annually in February, and raise heart-health awareness. 

    Coinciding with the Goosebump Walk/Run was ‘A Fair of the Heart’, where community members were able to enjoy blood pressure and cardiac health screenings, including free baseline EKGs, nutrition and diet information, education materials, and conversations with San Juan Health Partners cardiologists. Children and youth took part in a coloring contest where they either colored in a heart or drew their favorite heart-health activity. Youth from 13 to 17 learned how to calculate their target heart rates.

    “Heart disease is the number one cause of death among Americans,” says Barbara Galvich, manager of cardiac patient care services at San Juan Regional Medical Center. “The more we can motivate our friends, families, and neighbors to be active, to know their weight and cholesterol numbers, and be informed about heart health, the more they will be empowered to take charge and prevent chronic heart disease. That’s why San Juan Regional Medical Center and San Juan Health Partners Cardiology were so pleased to offer this free community event, which enjoyed a very strong turnout this year.”
