Childbirth Education Classes

San Juan Regional Medical Center is committed to providing the support services and education expecting parents need to make sure their baby gets the best start in life. We offer a series of complimentary Childbirth Preparation classes that cover a range of topics important for expecting mothers and their families.

Bump Day: It covers breathing strategies, tips for laboring at home, when to come to the hospital and what to expect once you get to the hospital as well as medical interventions such as an epidural. Register for the December 17 class.

Labor and Pain Management: This is a single class that covers one of the most feared aspects of having a baby – the pain associated with labor and delivery. Register for the December 7 class.

Childbirth and Newborn Crash Course: This intensive and fast-paced class covers everything about what to expect during the third trimester of pregnancy, labor and delivery, postpartum concerns, breastfeeding basics and newborn care. Register for the November 26 class.

Grandparenting 101: Topics to be addressed will include newborn care refreshers, car seat updates, safe sleep practices, supporting breastfeeding, ways to offer support to your children and lots more. Register for the November 22 or December 12 class.

Newborn Care Basics: The class is intended for both parents or any caregivers of an infant to learn essential information. Register for the December 14 class.

Breastfeeding Basics: This course covers all the basics of breastfeeding. It is intended for the first-time mom or as a refresher for a mom who has already experienced breastfeeding. Register for the December 13 class.

Natural Childbirth Preparation: This class is designed to help prepare a mother for giving birth without medicinally based pain interventions during labor and delivery.  This class should be taken in the second trimester or early in the third trimester but is open to moms at any stage during their pregnancy. Register for the November 23 class.

Postpartum Care and Concerns: This class covers what to expect for both mom and baby during the postpartum period which extends into the first year after the birth of the baby. Register for the December 17 class.

Shaken Baby Syndrome Informational Course: This class covers all the essentials parents need to know about Shaken Baby Syndrome.  It covers how and why SBS happens and how to prevent it. Register for the December 5 class.

Gearing Up!: This class covers what you need to have as you bring your baby home from the hospital from the absolute essentials and must haves, to what you shouldn’t waste money on and the things that are no longer considered safe, even if they are still on the market.  Register for the November 22 class.

Teen Pregnancy Crash Course: This single day class gives a broad overview of the unique challenges faced by pregnant teens, ages 13 to 19.  Register for the November 25 class.

Nutrition and Pregnancy: This class covers the essential nutrients needed for a healthy pregnancy, good sources of these nutrients, caloric needs by trimester, the importance of exercise and remaining active, resources to explore and fun recipes to try. Register for the December 6 class.

Gestational Diabetes and Pregnancy: This class is intended for moms that have been diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes however anyone just wanting information is welcome to take the class. Register for the December 18 class.

The Dad Class: This class is just for Dads! It gives Dads a chance to ask questions and to learn essential baby care skills as well as how to support their partner through pregnancy, labor and delivery and postpartum. Register for the December 19 class.

 

Meet Our Educator

 

Kathy Coleman

Kathy has a wealth of educational experience, including Science Teacher and Science Department Chair at Bloomfield High School, as well as multiple positions at Dzilth-na-o-dith-hle Community Grant School. Kathy holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana, a master’s degree in Secondary Science Education from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, and an Occupational Health and Safety Certificate from San Juan College.
